Transmitters On Boats In: The operation of radio transmitters on boats in U.S. waters is governed by the rules and regulations of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). This includes radiotelephones of all types, radars, emergency beacons, and all other devices that radiate a signal; receiving equipment is not regulated.
BASIC CONSIDERATIONS
GPS receivers are powered by internal dry-cell batteries or they can be connected to the boat's electrical system, using an adapter if necessary. Hand-held models have their own antenna, but operate more successfully if connected to a high, fixed antenna with a clear view of the sky in all directions. The display of a GPS receiver shows position in latitude and longitude; most sets can
Maritime DGPS system; the coasts and Great Lakes are covered to a distance of 50 to more than 200 miles offshore, and there are transmitters for portions of the Mississippi River System. GPS is so widely used for so many varied applications that a Nationwide DGPS System with more than 60 transmitters in the interior of the country is well on its way to implementation by the Coast Guard. Many countries have established DGPS systems using the same basic techniques as the USCG system.See Also Wooden Boats:Wash down bulkheads with soap and water or a multipurpose cleaner. On wooden boats, treat forepeak and cuddy corners that get little ventilation with anti-dryrot compounds.
After washing and airing, use a fungus-control treatment to inhibit mold and mustiness in cabinets and lockers.
Before fiberglass became the hull material of choice, a boat's seams were caulked in the springtime and then the Boat would be launched and watched carefully to see if the seams would swell shut before the Boat took on too much water and started to sink. Fortunately, raking out old dried compound and refilling the seams of wooden boats is no longer a major part of fitting-out. But keeping water outside the Boat where it belongs is still the job of a variety of sealants.
On The Other Hand See Nearby Boats:9. Call for help if necessary. If the victim is not rescued immediately, get on the radio with the urgent communications signal PAN-PAN to summon assistance from the Coast Guard, marine police, and nearby boats. Continue the search until the victim is located or you are released by a competent authori
To avoid this, strip the topsoil first. Pile it either nearby or where change of grade is to be made. Then grade the subsoil to the desired contours but six inches or more (depending upon the depth of topsoil to be put back over it) below the finish grade.
Topsoil is valuable. Save all you have. It is worth going to considerable trouble to do this. If your house has a cellar you may find topsoil under subsoil against the house or nearby. This is where the builder dumped excavation material on the ground without first stripping the topsoil. It is a common practice. In your grading operations take care to correct this and bring all available topsoil to the surface.
