Swimming And Sailing Are Chiefly: Sports to be practiced in Italy include, as everywhere, golf (check with the local EPT offices in any city or large resort), but swimming and sailing are chiefly suggested by Italy's well-watered geography, both fresh and salt. In such handsomely equipped bi-seasonal holiday centers as Cortina, sports of almost all types are very popular, tennis, golf, shooting and fishing in summer, skiing, skating and tobogganing in winter.
Sports for participation are chiefly salmon and trout fishing, especially in the northern rivers, and, of all things, swimming. You may not feel rugged enough to hy the open ocean, though it is really attractive at times, from Reykjavik's Nautholsvik Beach, but the pools warmed by earth's fires, such as that of Laugaskard, are most inviting. The name Laugaskard is the equivalent of the Greek Thermopylae, or "Hot Gateway." In the heart of Reykjavik there is an excellent warm pool in the establishment of the Municipal Swimming Baths on the street called Baronstigur. The water here is a constant 86 degrees. Every school child in Iceland, by the way, must learn to swim before he or she can earn a diploma.See Also Sailing From:Publishes a periodic journal, The Spray, and monthly newsletters.
