Buccaneer Sailboats:

Buccaneer Sailboats, Sailboat Classified, Sailboat MastOn boats, power or sail, that have a mast with a gaff, the U.S. ensign should be flown at the peak of the gaff. On Marconi-rigged buccaneer sailboats, it can be flown from the leech of the aftermost sail, two-thirds of the way up. It is never displayed on a sailboat while racing. On powerboats, and optionally on buccaneer sailboats, the U.S. flag is flown at the stern. On sport-fishing boats, where it would obstruct normal fishing activity, the ensign can be flown from a halyard rigged on the centerline just aft of the tuna tower.

buccaneer sailboats of 16 feet or more in length, even without any auxiliary power or fuel tanks, must have at least one B-I extinguisher.

See Also Sailboat Classified:

A sailboat classified with an auxiliary engine must be capable of showing the lights of both a sailboat classified and a power boat; the lights must be wired so that they can be changed from one display to the other.

Day sailors should wash off salt when a sailboat classified is docked or hauled. Mild sudsing with soap (no detergents) plus freshwater rinse is the best springtime treatment.

On The Other Hand See Sailboat Mast:

The simplest, and probably most accurate, bearings are those taken dead ahead with the steering compass. No auxiliary equipment or other person is required. If you are sure that you are in safe waters, you can momentarily swing a powerboat off course for a few seconds to take such a bearing. This procedure will not normally work on a sailboat mast where the mast blocks direct forward vision.

a USPS member. The preferred location is at the starboard spreader of the mast, the most forward mast if there is more than one. If there is no mast, it is often flown from a radio antenna on the starboard side. On smaller boats that have a location for only one flag, it can be flown at the stern in lieu of the national or yacht ensign. It is displayed during the same hours as the national ensign.
