Of the large number of lizards existing in the world there are but two that are venomous. These are closely related, and both occur in the New World. The Gila monster (pronounced /zee-la), Heloderma suspectum, occurs in the desert regions of southern Utah and Nevada, Arizona, western New Mexico, and Sonora, Mexico; while the Mexican beaded lizard, Heloderma horridum, is found only in Mexico. These two sluggish lizards do not strike as do snakes.
