A Sailboat:

A Sailboat, Sailboat Is Docked, Powerboat- Sailboat EncountersA sailboat with an auxiliary engine must be capable of showing the lights of both a sailboat and a power boat; the lights must be wired so that they can be changed from one display to the other.

Day sailors should wash off salt when a sailboat is docked or hauled. Mild sudsing with soap (no detergents) plus freshwater rinse is the best springtime treatment.

See Also Sailboat Is Docked:

• The yacht club burgee. Usually triangular in shape, but sometimes swallow-tailed, a yacht club burgee is flown by day only, or by day and night, as set by a club's rules. It is flown from the bow of mast-less and single-masted motorboats, and from the foremost masthead of vessels with two or more masts. The burgee may be flown while underway (but not racing) and while anchored or docked. • The Power Squadron pennant. Each squadron has its own identifying pennant. This is always triangular in shape and is flown similarly to a yacht club burgee. • Owner's Private Signal. This is normally swallow-tailed in shape, but may be rectangular or triangular (a pennant). It is flown from the masthead of a single-masted motorboat or sailboat is docked. If there are two or more masts, it is flown from the aftermost masthead. It may be flown by day only, or by day and night. A mastless motorboat may fly this signal from the bow staff in lieu of a club burgee.

Assistance on board a Boat can be useful, or it can do more harm than good. If you don't know what to do, sit down, stay out of the way, and keep quiet. Always keep out of the line of vision of the helmsman and be particularly quiet and unobtrusive when the craft is being docked or undocked.

On The Other Hand See Powerboat- Sailboat Encounters:

POWERBOAT- sailboat ENCOUNTERSSAILBOAT ENCOUNTERS The above situations involve encounters between two power-driven vessels.

If a powerboat encounters a sailboat (with no machinery being used for propulsion), the latter has the right-of-way regardless of the configuration of the meeting, except that a sailing vessel overtaking a power vessel (possible, but not likely) is the give-way vessel. Whistle signals are not used.
